Our Story

Over five decades of Tasmanian winemaking, crafting hand-picked wines that celebrate heritage and flavour

Over 50 Years of Tasmanian Winemaking

Nestled at the entrance to Northern Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, Velo Wines blends over 50 years of heritage with a passion for boutique, cool-climate winemaking.

Originally established in 1966 as Chateau Legana by Tasmanian wine pioneers Graham Wiltshire and Michael Curtis, the vineyard is home to Tasmania’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines, alongside Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.

Celebrating Tradition, Crafting the Future

In 2001, the estate was rebranded as Velo Wines by Michael and Mary Wilson, paying tribute to Michael’s career as an Olympic cyclist. The vineyard has since flourished under the expert guidance of Rod Thorpe, former founder of Moore’s Hill and Velo’s vineyard manager, whose stewardship has achieved record yields while maintaining exceptional quality.

In late 2024, Velo welcomed a passionate Sydney based surgeon as its new owner, dedicated to elevating the winery while preserving its celebrated heritage.

Velo Wines continues to honour its heritage while embracing the future, producing distinctive, hand-crafted wines that reflect the character, climate, and spirit of Tasmania.

Honouring Excellence: Award-Winning Velo Wines

Velo Wines has earned numerous awards and accolades over the years, including four bronze and two silver medals at the 2019 Tasmanian Wine Show. The vineyard produces around 15 tonnes of premium fruit each year, with all 2024 vintage grapes grown onsite at Legana, ensuring exceptional quality from vine to harvest.
